Brann’s Champions League hopes crushed after loss to Salzburg

Brann v Salzburg

Brann’s hopes of progressing in the Champions League took a massive hit after a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Austrian side RB Salzburg this evening at the Brann Stadion.

The home team stunned Salzburg early with a well-deserved lead thanks to Sævar Atli Magnússon’s 20th-minute goal. Brann showed energy and intent, disrupting Salzburg’s rhythm and raising hopes among the home fans. The Norwegians defended stoutly throughout the first half, maintaining their 1–0 advantage going into the break.

A Promising Start Undone by Second-Half Dominance

However, the game’s complexion shifted dramatically after halftime. Salzburg came out firing and quickly erased the deficit in a whirlwind of attacking moves. Nene Dorgeles equalised in the 58th minute, followed closely by Karim Onisiwo’s goal just three minutes later, putting Salzburg 2–1 ahead by the 61st minute. The visitors continued to dominate, with Yorbe Vertessen adding a third goal in the 87th minute to effectively seal the match. Deep into stoppage time, Maurits Kjærgaard capped off Salzburg’s comprehensive comeback by scoring their fourth in the 92nd minute.

Brann Faces an Almost Impossible Task in Second Leg

Despite Brann’s spirited first-half performance and early promise, Salzburg’s superior quality and relentless energy in the second half proved decisive. The Austrians’ clinical finishing and tactical adjustments overwhelmed the hosts, leaving Brann with a significant deficit to overturn in the return leg.

The tie now heavily favours Salzburg, who showed why they are formidable contenders in Europe, while Brann must regroup and prepare for a challenging away leg to keep their very slim Champions League dream alive.

The winners of this tie will face Club Brugge in the third qualifying round for a place in the coveted league phase. For Brann, that is now very unlikely to happen, and Norwegian hopes will most likely now rest with Bodø/Glimt as Norway’s sole representative unless a miracle happens in the return leg.
