Dag-Eilev Fagermo has returned as the manager of Strømsgodset almost twenty years after his first spell at the club. The Drammen side has endured a poor start to the season and is now looking to the experienced coach in a bid to recover and avoid further decline.
After nine matches, Strømsgodset are languishing in 14th place in the league table, a position that puts them in genuine danger of relegation. Neither the club’s supporters nor its leadership are willing to accept such a fate, and the decision has been made to bring in a familiar figure who they believe can guide them out of trouble.
Fagermo’s managerial experience spans several clubs, and although he most recently took charge of Lillestrøm, he left that role in under a year. His return to Strømsgodset has not been welcomed unanimously. In fact, the reaction has been deeply divided, with a significant section of the club’s fan base expressing disappointment and even anger over the appointment.
Supporters Divided Over Return of Former Coach
Despite his previous connection with the club and extensive experience, many Strømsgodset supporters have made it clear they are not in favour of Fagermo’s return. The backlash following the announcement has been substantial, with critics questioning the wisdom of bringing back a coach whose earlier departure had not left a universally positive impression.
There appears to be a sense of unease around the club, not just because of the team’s current position but also due to doubts about whether Fagermo is the right person to lead them forward. Rebuilding trust with the fans will be an essential part of his challenge, alongside the more immediate task of securing points on the pitch.
Fagermo Responds to Criticism and Looks Ahead
Fagermo is under no illusions about the controversy surrounding his return. Addressing the situation, he offered both humour and honesty in his remarks, as quoted by TV2: “This was probably the first girl I was with and it ended. Now that I’m back, I’m not sitting around talking about all the exes,” he joked, before adopting a more serious tone.
“For me, it’s about what I and we can do going forward to become better. I have no problem understanding that it’s a controversial choice. It’s completely understandable,” he added.
With the season well underway and relegation a looming threat, all eyes will be on Fagermo to see if he can deliver the turnaround Strømsgodset so desperately need. The coming weeks will test not only his tactical abilities but also his capacity to win over a sceptical fan base and reunite the club behind a common goal.
