Dag-Eilev Fagermo reacts after his changes did not stop in-form Viking

Strømsgodset entered the weekend clash with Viking hoping to end a damaging run of six consecutive defeats. Their form had been poor, and the pressure was mounting on the team to produce a result. However, facing one of the most dominant teams in Norwegian football this season was always going to be a significant challenge.

Viking have been exceptional in recent months, displaying consistency, attacking power and defensive discipline. Their position at the top of the league is no surprise, as they have developed a reputation for being extremely difficult to break down and relentless going forward. Many observers are now questioning not if, but when their remarkable form will falter. Still, few would have predicted that a struggling Strømsgodset side might be the ones to halt their momentum.

Fagermo’s Tactical Gamble Falls Short

Strømsgodset’s Dag-Eilev Fagermo approached the game with caution, well aware of Viking’s attacking threat. In response, he deployed a back five in an attempt to limit the damage and contain what is widely regarded as one of the best attacking units in Norway at the moment. For the opening 30 minutes, the plan appeared to be working. Strømsgodset maintained a compact shape and managed to keep Viking from finding the back of the net.

However, as the first half progressed, Viking began to exert more control. Their attacking pressure eventually broke through the defensive setup, and they scored just before half-time, reinforcing their status as one of the title favourites.

Following the match, Fagermo admitted that the team’s current mindset, shaped by recent defeats, had played a part in their approach. Speaking to VG, he stated, “We have to dare more, because the players are affected by many losses. We should rather take the consequences of that. In the second half we dare to play, and then we will be a much better football team.”

Viking Continue to Show Their Championship Credentials

Although Viking did not find the game easy, they once again demonstrated why they are being tipped to lift the title. Their resilience, quality in key moments and ability to adapt tactically underline their credentials as genuine contenders. For Strømsgodset, the search for a turning point continues, but they can take some encouragement from a competitive display against the league’s top side.
