After a dreadful start to the season, FK Haugesund have acted decisively by sacking Sancheev Manoharan and appointing a new head coach. The Norwegian side currently sits at the bottom of the league table after nine matches without a single win and just one point to their name. With eight defeats and just one draw, the club’s position is critical, and immediate change was deemed necessary.
Toni Korkeakunnas Takes Charge
According to a report from VG, the club have appointed Finnish manager Toni Korkeakunnas to lead the team for the rest of the season and beyond. He has signed a contract until 2026 and will be tasked with the enormous challenge of steering Haugesund to safety in the remaining matches.
Korkeakunnas arrives in Norway with a strong coaching résumé from his homeland. He led HJK Helsinki to the Veikkausliiga title in 2023 and has been recognised with several individual honours for his tactical acumen and leadership. However, this role marks his first venture outside of Finland, and it comes at a time of high pressure and expectation.
The 57-year-old coach has acknowledged the scale of the task but remains confident in his ability to rescue the team. His optimism and determination to succeed were key factors in accepting the role at such a challenging time.
A Difficult Road Ahead
Haugesund’s problems have been evident from the outset of the campaign. Defensive frailty, lack of attacking cohesion, and low morale have plagued their performances. However, Korkeakunnas believes there is still time to reverse the club’s fortunes.
In speaking to the club, he expressed both his personal ambition and belief in the project. “I have been waiting for the right opportunity to try my hand abroad. Now it suits my family back home in Finland, and I am very happy to be able to realise my dream of coaching a foreign club,” he said.
The new manager’s ability to adapt to the Eliteserien and inspire a turnaround will be tested immediately. With the season slipping away, Haugesund need results quickly if they are to survive.
