Former Hull City youth star is the new Sarpsborg coach

Martin Foyston

Martin Foyston has been appointed as the new manager of Sarpsborg 08 following the club’s decision to part ways with Christian Michelsen. After a season marked by inconsistency and underperformance, Sarpsborg turned to Foyston in the hope that his arrival will provide renewed energy and a clearer path forward.

The team believes that the current squad is capable of delivering stronger results than those achieved so far, and the change in leadership is intended to unlock that potential. Michelsen’s departure created a vacancy that required careful consideration, and the club is confident that Foyston can offer a new approach and improved direction.

Foyston’s Background and Experience

Foyston’s playing career began with Hull City at youth level, though he never managed to break through as a professional. Instead, he dedicated himself to coaching, building a long career on the sidelines that has taken him across several clubs and leagues.

The 43-year-old most recently worked with Östers IF, a spell that came to an end earlier this year after a difficult run of results. Despite this setback, Sarpsborg remain convinced that he has the qualities needed to steer the team towards greater consistency. His familiarity with Norwegian football, combined with his experience in both domestic and international environments, are seen as strong assets.

Foyston himself has expressed confidence in his ability to meet expectations at his new club. According to VG, he said: “I have a long experience with Norwegian football. Norway was my home for a long time with both the national team and club football. My son was born in Norway, so my family is well known. When I got the opportunity to come to Sarpsborg, it was as if things fell into place in a perfect way. I’m looking forward to it.”

Expectations at Sarpsborg

With only a handful of matches remaining this season, Sarpsborg hope that Foyston can secure important wins and possibly mount a late push towards a European place. While the task is challenging, the club believe that his leadership can inspire improvement and reinvigorate the squad’s performances.

Foyston’s appointment represents both an opportunity and a challenge, but he has made it clear that he is determined to succeed. For Sarpsborg, the new era begins with the belief that a fresh approach can still salvage something meaningful from the campaign.
