FIFA has faced strong criticism after overturning the red card that would have ruled Folarin Balogun out of the United States’ World Cup round of 16 clash against Belgium.
Balogun had originally been sent off during the USA’s victory against Bosnia and was expected to serve a suspension for the following match, only for FIFA to reverse the decision and clear him to play against Belgium instead.
The move has generated widespread debate across the football world because such a decision is viewed as highly unusual at this stage of a major international tournament. Questions have also been raised about consistency and the wider implications for disciplinary procedures moving forward.
FIFA’s reputation has already faced criticism in recent years, and this latest controversy has intensified discussion surrounding the governing body’s decision-making and the perception of fairness within the competition.
Growing reaction to FIFA decision
Although Norway are not directly involved in the matter, there is a belief that any nation facing the United States in similar circumstances could feel aggrieved by the outcome and the timing of the reversal.
The controversy has also increased scrutiny on the role of VAR and the disciplinary process, particularly because the original decision had already been reviewed and upheld during the match itself.
Norway manager Stale Solbakken was among those asked to comment on the situation, and he expressed clear disagreement with FIFA’s handling of the matter. Speaking via the Daily Mail, he said:

“Maybe he scores a goal, maybe he plays a good game, and the Belgians will be furious.”
