Injuries are an inevitable part of football, but it remains deeply unfortunate when they plague players over an extended period. Such has been the case for Fredrikstad midfielder Joannes Bjartalid, who has finally returned to action after nearly two years of persistent physical setbacks.
The 29-year-old Faroese international has been with Fredrikstad since 2023 and quickly became one of the most influential figures in their squad. Known for his vision, technical ability and leadership on the pitch, Bjartalid had been in excellent form before injuries began to disrupt his career. What followed was a lengthy and frustrating period, with the midfielder unable to contribute consistently to the team’s efforts.
A Long Road to Recovery
Bjartalid was able to feature in only 11 matches across the entirety of the last season. His participation this season has been even more limited, with just two appearances prior to his latest return. Despite the difficulties, he has shown resilience and determination, focusing on his recovery and remaining connected with the team throughout his absence.
However, after a long and challenging spell on the sidelines, he now believes he is returning to the form that once made him a vital part of Fredrikstad’s starting eleven. Last week, he made his first appearance since December 2024, a moment that was marked by a warm and emotional reception from the Fredrikstad supporters.
Emotional Return to the Pitch
Speaking to TV2 after the match, Bjartalid shared his emotional experience, stating:
“It was a bit much. I hadn’t heard that song in a few months, and then you get that reception… It was hard to hold back the tears.
“Since January 2024, I have probably been injured for 11–12 months in total.
“Last year it was leaden. It came again, again, again. Many thoughts arise: ‘Are you done?’ ‘Has your body given up on you?’”
His words reflect the mental toll such long-term injuries can take on professional athletes. Now, with his return to the pitch, both Bjartalid and Fredrikstad will be hoping he can stay fit and play a crucial role in the remainder of the season.
