Molde completes move for New York City defender Birk Risa

Birk Risa

Birk Risa has completed his return to Molde following three years in Major League Soccer with New York City FC. The defender, who previously played for Molde before heading abroad, expressed his delight at being back in familiar surroundings.

Risa made the move to the MLS from Molde in 2023, having previously been regarded as one of the standout defenders in the Eliteserien. His form made him a sought-after player at the time. In the United States, he became a regular for New York City FC, featuring in 17 matches this season.

Molde Look to Reinforce Their Defence

Despite his contributions abroad, Risa was keen to return to Norway, and according to VG, Molde has secured his services once more in a bid to address ongoing defensive issues. The club is currently 13th in the league table, having endured a difficult campaign with just four wins from 14 matches and eight losses.

Their defence has been a particular concern, with the team conceding 22 goals so far. It is hoped that Risa’s presence at the back will bring the stability and leadership that the team has been lacking. His exposure to a different footballing culture in the MLS could offer valuable insight and maturity both for himself and his teammates.

Risa Reflects on His Return

The report also notes that Risa had six months remaining on his contract with New York City FC, but he opted to leave early in order to facilitate the move back to Norway. His decision underlines his enthusiasm to rejoin Molde and make an immediate impact.

“It has been absolutely fantastic to come back. Already during the approach, when I saw the mountains and the stadium again, I felt that this was going to be good. Now it starts,” says Risa, as quoted by the same report.

With Molde looking to turn their season around, Risa’s arrival could mark a turning point as the club attempts to climb out of the lower part of the table.
