OH Leuven wants to sign Union Saint-Gilloise Norwegian midfielder

Mathias Rasmussen

Former Brann midfielder Mathias Rasmussen is expected to leave Union Saint-Gilloise during the current transfer window, with OH Leuven making a move to secure his services. The Belgian side have reportedly opened talks with Union as they seek to strengthen their squad.

Rasmussen joined Union in 2023 following his departure from Brann and initially played a central role in the team. In his debut campaign, he featured in more than 50 matches as the club enjoyed an impressive season domestically and in Europe. His consistency and work rate made him an important figure in midfield, and he quickly settled into Belgian football.

Declining Role at Union

Since then, however, his influence has diminished. Last season saw his playing time reduced, and this term he has been restricted to just two substitute appearances totalling twenty-two minutes. The loss of his starting role has raised questions about his long-term future, with the club appearing less reliant on him than in previous campaigns.

That situation has opened the door for OH Leuven, who have identified Rasmussen as a player capable of improving their fortunes. Leuven have struggled in the Belgian league and see his experience and versatility as qualities that could provide much-needed balance and creativity in their midfield.

Union’s Position

According to HLN, Leuven have already made their approach and are keen to persuade Rasmussen to make the switch. However, Union Saint-Gilloise may prove reluctant to sanction a transfer. With the club in contention for a place in the Champions League this season, they are conscious of the need to maintain depth within their squad and may prefer to keep him as an option.

The coming days will determine whether Rasmussen is allowed to pursue a new challenge or whether Union insist on retaining him for their European campaign. For the player, the opportunity to return to regular football could prove tempting, while Leuven remains hopeful that talks can lead to an agreement.
