Patrick Berg breaks his silence on turning down Chicago Fire

Patrick Berg

Patrick Berg was reportedly in line to earn as much as 50 million kroner per season if his proposed move to Chicago Fire had been completed. Just weeks ago, the MLS side was said to be closing in on a deal to sign him from Bodø/Glimt, the club where he has spent the majority of his career.

The midfielder has been a key figure at the club, increasingly becoming the go-to player to lead the team to success on the pitch. He has embraced that responsibility and is thriving in the role, helping his side compete at the highest level in Norway.

Career Decisions and Considerations

Berg previously left Bodø/Glimt to spend part of 2022 in France with Lens, though the experience did not meet his expectations and he returned to his hometown club after a few months. The potential move to Chicago Fire presented another opportunity to play abroad, but the Norwegian international had to weigh several personal factors before making a decision.

The midfielder has now provided insight into why the transfer did not materialise, emphasising that family considerations played a major role in his decision. Berg said, as quoted by Nettavisen:

“Of course, you have to make an assessment when there is real interest and it looks like things are starting to get close to going well

“Then you have to take a look with your family and yourself about what weighs most heavily. I have been very clear all along that I am very happy at Glimt, and I am in no way financially strapped here either.”

Staying at Home

The failed transfer means that Berg remains a key figure for Bodø/Glimt, continuing to contribute to the club that has been central to his career. While the move to MLS could have elevated him to one of the highest-earning Norwegian players abroad, the midfielder prioritised stability and personal satisfaction over financial incentives.

Berg’s decision highlights the complexities professional footballers face when considering transfers abroad, balancing ambition with family and personal well-being. His continued presence at Bodø/Glimt ensures the club retains a player crucial to their plans for domestic and European campaigns, and fans can expect him to maintain his influential role as the season progresses.
