Erling Haaland began this season in unstoppable form, with the striker scoring an extraordinary number of goals every time he played. The Norwegian did everything possible to maintain his status as one of the most feared forwards in world football, and it appeared as though his scoring run would not slow down. Manchester City relied heavily on him, and he consistently delivered, often contributing a significant share of the team’s total goals. At certain stages of the campaign, he had scored more than 50 per cent of City’s goals, underlining his importance to their attacking play.
Recently, however, Haaland has found goals harder to come by. He has scored just once in his last six matches, a return that is surprisingly low by his standards. The striker has continued to receive ample game time, which has led to concern among supporters who are unaccustomed to seeing the Norway forward struggle in front of goal.
A Demanding Schedule Takes Its Toll
After Manchester City’s League Cup match against Newcastle United last night, Pep Guardiola addressed Haaland’s form and suggested fatigue was a key factor. The striker has featured in almost every game City have played this season, and the physical and mental demands appear to be catching up with him. Guardiola’s comments indicate an awareness of the risks involved in relying so heavily on one player throughout a long and demanding campaign.
Support for Guardiola’s Assessment
Yaw Amankwah supported the manager’s view and explained the situation to TV2:
“Guardiola watches him in training every single day, so when he says he’s tired, it’s not without reason. I think he’s aware that there’s a risk in relying so heavily on one player for so many games over time. There’s probably always a concern in the back of Guardiola’s mind that the rubber band shouldn’t be stretched so far that it breaks.”
The comments reflect a broader concern about workload management at the highest level. While Haaland remains one of the most prolific strikers in the game, City may need to find ways to protect him physically to ensure he can maintain his effectiveness as the season progresses. Balancing performance with recovery could prove crucial for both the player and the club.
