The Norwegian Football Federation has handed a three-match ban to Stefán Ingi Sigurðarson for violent conduct during Sandefjord’s recent fixture against Viking, and the club is far from pleased. The striker, who has been a key contributor this season with five goals in seven league games, was shown a straight red card in the match, and the opponents were also awarded a penalty.
Sandefjord were clearly dissatisfied with the decision at the time and had perhaps hoped for a one-match ban. However, when the NFF announced that the suspension would span three matches, the club reacted strongly and made their displeasure known in a public statement. The 7th-placed team are now preparing for life without one of their most important players for a crucial run of fixtures.
Club to Miss Key Player for Three Matches
Sigurðarson’s absence will be felt when Sandefjord face Strømsgodset, Bryne and Haugesund in the coming weeks. The timing of the suspension could not be worse, and Sandefjord are fighting back. They believe the punishment is unjust and are formally protesting the decision.
In a statement published on their official website, the club explained the incident from their perspective:
“Sandefjord Fotball is completely incomprehensible after we were informed today that our player Stefán Ingi Sigurðarson has been suspended for three games, after what we consider to be an incorrect sending-off against Viking on May 16. After some commotion in his own penalty area, our player tries to get up from the ground, at the same time as a Viking player pulls him down. Our player tries to push away the opponent with his forearm, so that he can get up.”
Sandefjord Launches Protest Against Decision
Sandefjord are refusing to accept the suspension without challenging it. They maintain that the red card was given in error and that Sigurðarson’s actions did not warrant such a harsh penalty.
The club’s protest highlights their belief that not only was the referee’s decision incorrect, but that the extended suspension compounds what they view as an already unfair outcome. Whether the NFF will reduce or overturn the ban remains to be seen, but for now, Sandefjord will be without one of their most reliable performers at a pivotal time in their campaign.
