Sondre Langås joined Derby County at the beginning of 2025 with the aim of helping the club through a challenging period. The defender arrived from Viking and quickly established himself as one of the team’s most promising signings. However, his start in English football was disrupted by an early injury setback that ultimately required surgery.
Langås sustained the injury during a match against Blackburn in March. Despite feeling discomfort early in the game, he chose to continue playing. The club’s physio later confirmed that Langås had already been injured at the start of the match, but the defender insisted on staying on the pitch. His bravery was evident, particularly as he had only recently joined Derby County, and he did not want to let down the fans who had already shown him strong support.
Playing Through the Pain
Following the Blackburn match, Langås continued to make himself available for selection. Although the pain worsened, he persisted with training and attempted to maintain his match fitness. Over time, even routine physical tasks became difficult, but he refused to stop. Eventually, the 24-year-old was diagnosed with a ruptured meniscus, a serious condition that would require surgery.
Despite this, he delayed the operation until the end of the season. His decision was based on a strong sense of responsibility towards the club and its supporters. Langås explained his thinking in comments quoted by VG, stating, “The club has welcomed me so well, and then I didn’t want to throw in the towel. Since then it’s been about finding out what worked and what didn’t work. I felt 65-70 percent. I couldn’t stop abruptly and turn around, I struggled to jump. It just hurt.”
Looking Ahead After Surgery
Now that the surgery has been completed, Langås can begin focusing on his recovery and eventual return to action. His determination to continue playing through discomfort has earned him admiration from fans and colleagues alike. As he works towards full fitness, Derby County will be hopeful that the defender can return stronger and play a central role in their future plans.
