“Soon clear” Man City celebrate Haaland’s birthday by speaking to his former coach

Alexander Sørloth with Erling Haaland

Although born in England, Erling Haaland was raised in Norway, where he began his footballing journey. The prolific striker grew up in his parents’ hometown of Bryne, where his passion for sport first emerged.

From an early age, Haaland was an exceptionally athletic child and could have excelled in several disciplines. However, it was football that captured his interest, and he chose to pursue the sport with full commitment. His early years in Norway laid the foundation for what would become a remarkable career.

From Norway to Global Stardom

While most fans first became familiar with Haaland during his prolific spell at RB Salzburg, his journey began well before then. It was at Molde that he truly made his mark, catching the attention of scouts across Europe. His goal-scoring exploits in Norway were impossible to ignore, prompting Salzburg to secure his signature.

Haaland’s rise continued with a move to Borussia Dortmund, where he quickly established himself as one of the most lethal strikers in Europe. He then made the high-profile switch to Manchester City, where his development has only accelerated.

Now celebrating his 25th birthday, Haaland has signed a new long-term contract with Manchester City, reportedly set to keep him at the club for the next ten years. The Premier League champions are thrilled to retain one of the world’s best forwards and used the occasion of his birthday to reflect on his journey.

A Coach’s Early Insight

To mark the milestone, the Man City Media team spoke with Espen Undheim, Haaland’s first youth coach at Bryne FK. He continues to coach within the club’s youth setup and shared a vivid memory from Haaland’s early years: “What was soon clear to me was that he loved scoring goals – for some boys it was like, ‘yeah, ok, that’s good’ when they scored, but for Erling it was everything and he would run around with his arms in the air. It gave him such pleasure.”

That love for scoring has never faded. From his childhood days in Bryne to the biggest stages of European football, Haaland’s passion and dedication have remained constant. As he turns 25, it appears his story is only just beginning.
