Stale Solbakken has provided an update on the fitness of Julian Ryerson after the defender appeared to suffer a fresh injury during Norway’s 2-1 victory against Brazil in the round of 16.
Norway are now preparing for a difficult quarter-final clash against England, with both teams aiming to continue their strong runs in the competition.
The Norwegians are aware of the challenge ahead, especially after England became the first team in years to defeat Mexico at their most formidable stadium, a result that highlighted the Three Lions’ ability to handle pressure and expectation on the biggest stage.
Norway have impressed throughout the tournament, but there is a belief that they will need to raise their level again if they are to overcome England and progress further in the competition.
Concern over Ryerson fitness
One of the main concerns following the victory over Brazil centred on Ryerson after the defender appeared to struggle physically during the latter stages of the match.
He has become one of Norway’s most important players due to his consistency at right back, and supporters are eager to see him available for such a crucial encounter against England.
Solbakken moved quickly to calm fears regarding the defender’s condition and suggested the issue was not as serious as initially feared. Speaking via the Metro, he said:
“It was the calves. Fortunately, the injury held.”
“It’s just the strain, that he hasn’t trained enough. He’ll look even better in the next game.”
The Norway manager’s comments will encourage ahead of the meeting with England, particularly given Ryerson’s importance to the balance and defensive organisation of the side.
Norway possess enough quality to trouble England in the upcoming match, although it is expected to be a demanding contest for both nations as they continue their pursuit of success at the tournament.
