Supporter banned after bottle attack on Ole Selnæs

Rosenborg returned to winning ways with a convincing 2-0 victory away at Fredrikstad, but the match was overshadowed by an unpleasant incident involving Ole Selnæs. In the closing stages of the game, a glass bottle was thrown from the stands and struck the Rosenborg midfielder. The incident shocked players and spectators alike, taking the shine off what had been a strong performance from the visiting team.

The match had gone largely according to plan for Rosenborg, who controlled proceedings and took their chances well. Fredrikstad, on the other hand, struggled to make an impact and grew visibly frustrated as the game wore on. Despite the home side’s efforts to rally late in the match, it was an act from one of their supporters that became the headline story of the night.

Fredrikstad Takes Swift Action

After the bottle struck Selnæs, attention quickly turned to identifying the individual responsible. In a surprising turn, the supporter involved contacted the club himself the following day. He expressed regret for his actions and took responsibility. Fredrikstad responded by banning the individual indefinitely from attending future matches.

Espen Engebretsen, the general manager of Fredrikstad, confirmed the incident and the club’s response in an interview with VG. He explained that the club wanted to make it absolutely clear that such behaviour would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

He stated, “First, I want to be very clear that we completely distance ourselves from such images that we saw on Wednesday. A regretful supporter called yesterday who was in despair and said that he was the one who threw the bottle that hit. We have immediately chosen to ban him indefinitely.”

A Reminder of What is at Stake

While Norway is not known for widespread fan trouble, this event serves as a reminder that vigilance is always necessary. Football is an emotional game, and fans often experience intense highs and lows. However, there is a line that must never be crossed.

Player safety must remain a priority for every club, and Fredrikstad’s handling of the situation has shown that swift, responsible action is both possible and necessary. Supporters need to understand their role in keeping stadiums safe and enjoyable for everyone.
