Tromsø sells 21-year-old key player to Belgian side Charleroi

Jakob Napoleon Romsaas

As the summer transfer window continues to heat up across Europe, several Norwegian clubs are beginning to feel the effects of growing interest from foreign leagues. With most of the continent’s top flights now in their off-season, recruitment efforts are in full swing, and teams are looking toward Norway’s Eliteserien for talent.

Unlike many other European countries, the Norwegian league operates on a different calendar, meaning their clubs are still midway through the season when the rest of the continent begins strengthening. As a result, clubs like Tromsø are now increasingly vulnerable to losing key players before the domestic campaign reaches its conclusion.

Tromsø Lose Rising Star to Belgian Side

Tromsø have now become the latest Eliteserien club to part ways with a valuable player, as midfielder Jakob Napoleon Romsaas seals a move abroad. According to Sporten, the 21-year-old has completed a transfer to Belgian Pro League side Sporting Charleroi. The young midfielder has been on the radar of the Belgian club for some time, and they have finally managed to wrap up a deal.

Romsaas has been a prominent figure for Tromsø this season, featuring in eight league matches and playing a pivotal role in their strong start to the campaign. Though Tromsø had no intention of selling one of their standout performers, the offer on the table, reportedly worth €2 million, proved too difficult to reject for the club’s hierarchy.

A Costly Departure Amid a Promising Season

Financially, this is a significant windfall for Tromsø. Norwegian clubs rarely command such figures for player sales, so the opportunity to bank €2 million for a homegrown talent was understandably appealing. However, the timing of the transfer will undoubtedly be a blow on the sporting front.

Tromsø have enjoyed a positive opening to the season and currently finds themselves in a promising position in the table. Losing Romsaas mid-campaign could disrupt their momentum, and replacing him may prove difficult at this stage.

Still, the club will back their existing squad and recruitment team to manage the transition. As the summer progresses, Tromsø, like many of their Eliteserien counterparts, may need to remain vigilant, with more suitors likely to come calling.
