Valerenga sends striker back to the Netherlands on loan

Mees Rijks

Valerenga have confirmed that Mees Rijks has returned to the Netherlands on a season-long loan, joining De Graafschap in a move designed to help the forward regain form and playing time. The 22-year-old striker joined the Norwegian side last year and initially made a strong impression, but his recent struggles have led to a temporary return to his home country.

Since making the move to Valerenga, Rijks has scored 14 goals in 41 league appearances, a respectable return that contributed to the club’s campaign during his first season. However, his form this year has declined, with just one goal and two assists in 14 league matches, and his minutes on the pitch have been limited.

A Move to Rebuild Confidence

Valerenga announced the decision on their official website, confirming that Rijks will not return to Norway until the summer of 2026. The loan arrangement with De Graafschap provides the young forward with the opportunity to play regularly and improve his overall output, whether he returns to Valerenga afterwards or seeks a permanent move elsewhere.

There is a suggestion that homesickness may have played a role in his recent dip in form, and returning to the Netherlands could offer the right environment for him to regain his confidence and rhythm. The move is seen as beneficial for all parties involved, especially with interest in the player coming from other European countries.

Club Backs Decision as Best for Player

Valerenga’s sports director Joacim Jonsson addressed the move and gave insight into the decision behind the loan. As quoted by Valerenga’s official website, he stated:

“Mees is at an age where he needs playing time and being a first choice. There have been offers for him from both Turkey and Denmark, but he wanted to go to the Netherlands. Mees came in as a breath of fresh air and did a brilliant job in the promotion season, but his playing time has gradually become less. This is therefore a good solution for all parties.”

The club will now monitor his progress in the Dutch second division, with hopes that the consistent game time at De Graafschap will help Rijks rediscover the form that first brought him to Norway.
