Bodo/Glimt reached the semi-final of the Europa League last season, becoming the first Norwegian side to progress so far in a major European competition. The question now is whether they can replicate, or even surpass, that achievement in the current Champions League campaign. Vegard Leikvoll Moberg believes they are capable of doing exactly that.
Last term, Glimt’s remarkable run captured attention across the continent. In the present Champions League season, however, they initially struggled during the league phase and only secured progression in the closing games. Once in the playoff stage, they produced a stunning turnaround, defeating Inter Milan both home and away. That result has significantly altered perceptions, and leading European clubs may now view them as opponents to avoid in the round of 16.
From Underdogs to Contenders
In the Europa League last season, several teams underestimated Glimt until it was too late. A similar pattern could prove costly again if rivals fail to fully appreciate their quality. Although advancing to the semi-final of the Champions League would represent an even greater challenge, the Norwegian side has demonstrated that they can compete with established powers.
Their victory over Inter Milan, last season’s finalists, ensures they can no longer operate under the radar. The element of surprise may have diminished, but confidence within the squad appears stronger than ever.
Moberg’s Bold Prediction
Speaking to TV2, Moberg expressed optimism about Glimt’s prospects. He said: “Yes, Glimt can win the CL! They prove it with that streak of four straight against that opposition. Whether they do it is another question. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up lifting the trophy in Hungary!
“But it must be said, no one at Glimt has thought of the idea, they are taking it one fight at a time.”
His comments reflect growing belief in Norwegian football that Glimt’s achievements are no longer accidental. While winning the competition would be extraordinary, their recent performances suggest they are capable of challenging even the most formidable opponents.
