VFL Bochum adds Mikkel Rakneberg to their squad from Kristiansund

Mikkel Rakneberg

Mikkel Rakneberg has completed a move to VFL Bochum from Kristiansund, with the Bundesliga club making him one of their first signings of 2026. The transfer represents a significant step forward in his career and highlights Bochum’s continued interest in identifying talent from Scandinavian leagues.

The 23-year-old featured predominantly as a left back during his time in the Eliteserien, although his versatility allows him to operate further forward when required. That flexibility is considered one of his main strengths and is a key reason why he has been tipped to adapt well to the demands of German football. At this stage of his career, there is also a clear expectation that he can continue to improve over the coming seasons.

Progress from Norway to Germany

The Eliteserien has increasingly attracted attention from clubs across Europe, with many viewing it as a league capable of producing players who can succeed at a higher level. Teams from other top competitions have followed developments closely, and Premier League sides have previously recruited directly from Norway.

There is a growing belief that more Norwegian players will move to the top five leagues in Europe during the summer, continuing a trend of talent progression. Rakneberg’s move to Bochum fits within that wider pattern and reflects confidence in his potential to make the step up.

He was developed at Lillestrom before establishing himself at Kristiansund, where he played more than 80 Eliteserien matches between 2022 and 2025. That level of experience at a senior level is expected to aid his transition as he adjusts to a new country and a more demanding league.

Contract details and future ambitions

According to Bulinews, the transfer has already been completed, with Rakneberg joining Bochum as a free agent after running down his contract at Kristiansund. He has agreed a deal that runs until the summer of 2029, providing both player and club with long term stability.

Rakneberg will now be focused on further development in Germany, aware that continued improvement will be required if he hopes to attract interest from a bigger club in the future. The move also offers him the opportunity to strengthen his case for a potential call up to the senior national team as his career progresses.
