Viking sells Jost Urbancic as the left-back returns to Slovenia

Jost Urbancic

Slovenian defender Jost Urbancic has ended his time with Viking to return to his homeland, joining Olimpija Ljubljana in a permanent transfer. The move marks the conclusion of a productive spell for the player in Norway, during which he contributed significantly to the club’s recent rise.

Urbancic joined Viking from Slovenian side Gorica in 2023 and quickly established himself as a reliable performer in defence. His composed displays and work ethic earned praise throughout his time in Stavanger, and he played an important role in helping the team start the current season strongly. Viking now find themselves at the top of the Eliteserien standings, a position that reflects the collective efforts of the squad, including Urbancic’s contributions.

Departure Opens Door for Youth and Experience

While Viking still have a long way to go this season, they are well placed to mount a serious title challenge. However, Urbancic’s departure creates a vacancy in defence, placing increased responsibility on Viljar Vevatne, who has been with the club since 2018 and is one of its most experienced players.

The club is also expected to look towards youth, with promising talent Vetle Auklend earmarked as one of the players who could be developed to provide depth in the defensive line. His potential and recent development gave Viking enough confidence to sanction the sale of Urbancic, knowing there is talent waiting in the wings.

Viking Thank Key Contributor

The transfer to Olimpija Ljubljana is reported to have earned Viking approximately 900,000 euros, according to Sporten. This is considered a solid return for a player brought in just last year and could give the club the financial flexibility to strengthen other areas of the squad as the campaign progresses.

Reflecting on the defender’s exit, Viking’s sporting director Erik Nevland said: “Jost has been an important piece for us the last two years. We thank him for his efforts and wish him all the best in Olimpija Ljubljana.”

During his time at the club, Urbancic made over 40 appearances and scored once, leaving Viking with appreciation from both teammates and supporters for his service.
