Why John Arne Riise wanted the FK Haugesund job

John Arne Riise

John Arne Riise has expressed a strong interest in stepping into a managerial position in the Norwegian top flight and recently made an attempt to secure the FK Haugesund job. Following the departure of Sancheev Manoharan, Riise was one of the coaches eager to take over the role.

A former Norway international, Riise is best known for his distinguished playing career across Europe, notably with Liverpool, AS Roma and Fulham. During his time abroad, he contributed significantly to putting Norwegian footballers on the map. However, his managerial journey has yet to mirror the success he achieved on the pitch.

Riise Keen to Lead FK Haugesund

Despite not yet securing a major managerial role, Riise remains determined to establish himself in the dugout. His application to FK Haugesund was a clear signal of his readiness to take on a new challenge at the top level of Norwegian football. In an interview with TV2, he showed that he had done extensive homework on the club and was familiar with its structure, players and recent form.

“Yes, I am interested in that job, and the challenge it will provide. The club also knows that I am keen,” Riise stated. “I know the city and have a clear idea. Regardless of the situation they are in, the club also has to think about the future.”

Experience from a Career Abroad

Riise’s confidence in his potential as a manager is grounded in the experience he gained during his long playing career. Having worked with several renowned managers and played in top leagues, he believes he has developed a strong tactical understanding and leadership style suitable for management.

While critics may point to his limited coaching résumé, Riise is convinced that he can succeed if given the opportunity. He acknowledges that experience must be earned and hopes that a club will be willing to take a chance on him, allowing him to grow and prove his capability in a competitive environment.

For now, his ambitions remain clear: he wants to manage in Norway’s top tier, and he is actively preparing for the moment when a club like Haugesund gives him that chance.
