Wolves manager explains why Wolfe cannot get into his team

David Moller Wolfe

David Møller Wolfe has seen his influence at Wolves decline following his summer move to the club. The left-back started the opening league fixture, given the chance to stake a claim for a first-team spot, but his performance fell short of expectations. Over time, he has gradually lost the trust of his manager, who is focused on improving results after a difficult start to the season.

In the last five matches, Wolfe has not featured at all, a situation that is far from ideal for a player looking to maintain his place in the national team ahead of the World Cup. The defender’s desire to play is clear, but Wolves manager Vítor Pereira has his reasons for prioritising other options, and it is not a personal issue.

Pereira’s Perspective

Speaking to the Wolves website, Pereira commented on Wolfe’s situation: “He is one of the players that is fighting for his position in the best way. He is showing that he has quality, but Hugo [Bueno] is playing in a good level. It all depends, because if he keeps going with this work and he expresses himself and proves himself every day, then one day, he will have his chance to play, for sure. He’s a bit shy. Some players arrive in another world, and it’s like they were living here from a previous life, but for other players who come from different leagues, and the Dutch league is a different league, so you need some adaptation here. But now is the time for him to express himself, and he is doing this in the way that I like – not with words, but on the pitch.”

Pereira’s comments highlight that Wolfe’s path back into the team depends on consistent performance in training and proving he can outperform current starters. Adaptation to the Premier League, as well as demonstrating the mental and physical qualities required, are essential for Wolfe to regain his role.

Earning Game Time

The manager’s priority is to select players he trusts to deliver results on the pitch. For Wolfe, this means showing that he can be more effective than those currently ahead of him in Pereira’s system. Every training session and substitute appearance is now an opportunity to make a case for inclusion. If Wolfe can express himself and convince the coaching staff of his readiness, he has the potential to reclaim a first-team spot and contribute meaningfully to Wolves’ season.
